Piazza Unità d’Italia served as the centerpiece of Trieste’s European Mobility Week celebrations, where Trieste Trasporti and the city government highlighted new approaches to sustainable transport and digital mobility.

The event, titled Muoversi a Trieste, brought an electric bus into the square as a symbol of the city’s transition toward cleaner transit. Throughout the day, Trieste Trasporti representatives presented digital services designed to modernize the way residents move around the city. These included optical ticket validation, onboard purchases, on-demand services, and the new Weelo app, part of the regional MaaS FVG project, which integrates buses, trains, bike sharing, ferries, and parking into a single digital platform.

Michele Babuder, Trieste’s Councillor for Territorial Policies, emphasized both the importance of the new app and the growing popularity of the city’s bike-sharing program, BiTS. “We are seeing national interest in our app, which integrates transport into a single digital platform,” he said. “Trieste Trasporti is a key partner in this effort. Today we presented the new electric bus, but also our bike-sharing service, which is increasingly appreciated. There are now 24 stations in the city, with 11,000 annual users. During Mobility Week we are offering vouchers for annual subscriptions to further expand participation, improving the quality of life for residents.”

Maurizio Marzi Wildauer, president of Trieste Trasporti, underlined the company’s commitment to sustainability. “Once again this year we are standing alongside the city for this important event,” he said. “We brought a new fully electric bus to Piazza Unità. Trieste Trasporti has long pursued sustainable mobility, and by 2030 we will invest more than 100 million euros to renew the city’s bus fleet, building a system that is ecological, sustainable, and close to the needs of citizens.”

The initiative reflects a broader European push to reduce urban emissions and promote integrated, user-friendly transport systems. For Trieste, officials said, the combination of digital innovation and sustainable infrastructure is central to shaping how residents and visitors navigate the city in the years ahead.
