Thousands of music fans are expected to gather in Piazza Unità d’Italia on Saturday evening as the Gorillaz perform what organizers describe as the band’s only Northern Italy concert this summer.
The concert is scheduled to begin at 9:30 p.m., with gates opening at 5 p.m. and the evening’s program starting at 7:15 p.m. The box office will open at 4:30 p.m.
To accommodate the influx of visitors, city authorities have announced temporary traffic restrictions, expanded public transportation services and additional public safety measures.
Road closures will affect parts of the city center throughout the day on Saturday. From 1 p.m. until 3 a.m. Sunday, traffic will be prohibited along the waterfront between Via di Mercato Vecchio and Piazza Tommaseo, while Via San Carlo will also be closed. Access for pedestrians, cyclists and electric scooters will be restricted along the affected section of the waterfront cycle path. Additional parking and traffic restrictions around Largo Granatieri, Via Malcanton and Via della Muda Vecchia will remain in effect through Tuesday.
Officials are encouraging concertgoers to leave their cars in designated parking areas and use public transportation to reach the venue.
From the Barcola area, shuttle buses will operate beginning at 6 p.m. between Park Bovedo, Park Portovecchio and Largo Santos, a short walk from Piazza Unità d’Italia. Regular city bus routes will continue operating before the shuttle service begins. From the stadium area, several bus lines will provide frequent connections to the city center, with return services departing after the concert from Corso Italia. Shuttle and bus services will operate until 12:30 a.m.
A special late-night train departing Trieste at 12:29 a.m. on Sunday will provide additional transportation along the coast, stopping in Monfalcone, Cervignano, San Giorgio di Nogaro, Latisana and Portogruaro.
The city has also introduced temporary restrictions on alcohol sales and certain items during the weekend’s concerts, which include the Gorillaz on Saturday and Eiffel 65 on Sunday. Under an emergency ordinance signed by the mayor, businesses within a designated area surrounding Piazza Unità d’Italia will be prohibited from selling alcoholic beverages with an alcohol content above 12% during specified hours before and during the events. All drinks, regardless of type, must be served in paper or plastic cups.
Within the concert area, attendees will not be permitted to bring beverages in glass bottles or cans. Plastic bottles will be allowed only if they are uncapped. The ordinance also prohibits bringing in items considered potentially dangerous, including umbrellas, folding chairs, selfie sticks and pepper spray.
Violations of the ordinance may result in administrative fines ranging from €250 to €1,500.
City officials said the transportation and security measures are intended to manage large crowds and ensure safe access to one of Trieste’s largest outdoor concert weekends of the summer.
