Trieste’s summer cultural calendar begins in early July with a diverse lineup of events across music, theater, and cinema. Among the standout moments is a concert held at the Risiera di San Sabba, one of the city’s most solemn landmarks.
The Risiera, a former rice-husking facility converted by Nazi forces into a detention and police camp during the German occupation, remains the only concentration camp in Italy equipped with a crematorium. Today it is preserved as a national monument and memorial. Hosting a concert in such a setting adds a layer of historical reflection to the city’s contemporary cultural offerings.
Also on Tuesday, July 1, at 9:15 p.m., the gardens of Museo Sartorio will host “Per un pugno di Riso” (“For a Fistful of Rice”), a stand-up comedy evening presented as part of the third edition of Approdi, a national contest for comedians under 35. Local performer Andrea Mitri will serve as host, with guest appearance by Rosario Mancuso. Six emerging talents will take the stage, each given 12 minutes to impress both the expert jury and the audience.
That same evening, July 1, at 9:15 p.m., opera returns to the courtyard of Castello di San Giusto with a performance of Tosca, Puccini’s iconic work, in a new production following a successful debut earlier this season. The setting provides a dramatic backdrop for the classic opera, drawing both local and visiting audiences.
Additional events are scheduled throughout the week as part of the city’s broader Trieste Estate 2025 program, which continues to emphasize a balance of tradition and experimentation, local talent and national visibility.
