Trieste’s annual Trieste Estate summer festival will continue from Aug. 8 through Aug. 11 with a program spanning theater, jazz, rock, classical music, archaeology and historical performances at venues across the city.
The weekend opens on Saturday evening at the Sartorio Museum with Nero, an immersive theatrical production that reinterprets the Roman emperor’s life through a contemporary lens, exploring themes of identity, public expectations and reputation. Rather than portraying Nero solely as a historical tyrant, the production presents him as a teenager unexpectedly thrust into power and torn between political responsibility and artistic ambition. Audience members are invited to take an active role in the performance, which includes a live Latin chorus.
Also on Saturday, Piazza Verdi will host the third evening of the Trieste Calling the Boss festival, dedicated to American rock, blues and folk music. The Italian group Lovesick Duo will perform a repertoire inspired by classic American roots music.
Sunday’s schedule begins before sunrise with the traditional Concert at Dawn on the Molo Audace waterfront. Pianist and composer Riccardo Morpurgo will perform as part of the city’s TriesteLovesJazz series. Later that evening, Piazza Verdi will feature Blood Brothers, a Bruce Springsteen tribute band that has built an international following, while the Sartorio Museum garden will present a concert dedicated to Argentine composer Astor Piazzolla. Flautist Leonardo Grittani, winner of the Premio A. Piazzolla, will perform alongside international tango musicians in a program centered on Piazzolla’s compositions.
On Monday, the Sartorio Museum garden will host Viva la Belle Époque!, a musical journey through early 20th-century repertoire featuring the Lumen Harmonicum ensemble and works preserved in the archives of Trieste’s Carlo Schmidl Theatre Museum.
Meanwhile, Piazza Verdi will present The Final Countdown to… Rock Camp!, featuring the young Veneto-based band Final Stage, whose performance marks the 40th anniversary of Europe’s hit song The Final Countdown while showcasing material from the group’s debut album.
Tuesday’s program includes an evening dedicated to archaeologist and naturalist Carlo Marchesetti at the J.J. Winckelmann Museum garden. The event, marking the centenary of his death, combines historical documents, music and newly composed works to examine the life and scientific contributions of the longtime director of Trieste’s Natural History Museum.
The Sartorio Museum garden will also stage Mangiafuoco, a theatrical work centered on an Austrian soldier wounded during the Battle of Caporetto in 1917.
Music continues in Piazza Verdi with a progressive metal concert featuring Inner Vitriol and Trieste-based Red Code, while San Giusto Castle will host Gogol Bordello. The internationally known band, founded in 1999, is recognized for blending Eastern European folk traditions with punk and rock influences.
Trieste Estate is organized by the Municipality of Trieste, with support from regional tourism authorities and local cultural institutions. The festival’s events are held at several of the city’s museums, public squares and historic venues throughout the summer.
