Last November, the town of Versa in Romans d’Isonzo was hit by unprecedented flooding. Over two days, a stationary thunderstorm dumped 300 millimeters of rain, while strong sirocco winds caused the Judrio River to overflow, submerging some areas under more than 1.6 meters of water. Authorities described the event as historically rare, with a probability of once every 300 years.

Relief efforts mobilized more than 1,000 volunteers from over 120 municipalities, who provided debris removal, emergency housing, psychological support, and over 12,000 meals. Financial aid for temporary accommodation, property repairs, and damaged vehicles was distributed within weeks, supplementing state and insurance support.

An ongoing study of the Judrio basin will guide future flood prevention, including riverbed cleaning, levee reinforcement, and retention basins upstream. Civil Protection has also set up a hotline to assist residents with recovery and aid.
