Italian authorities carried out a new eviction of migrants in Trieste’s Porto Vecchio district on Thursday morning, clearing two abandoned buildings as part of a security operation coordinated by the local Prefecture.

Law enforcement officers entered Buildings 7 and 10 to verify the presence of people, while the Italian Red Cross conducted identification procedures and reviewed asylum requests. Some migrants arrived with documentation related to applications already submitted; others had none. Several individuals also presented themselves voluntarily, hoping to be placed in reception centers.

The inspections were ordered by the Provincial Committee for Public Order and Security and followed a series of fire incidents in the area. The two buildings will be sealed and made inaccessible. Four other disused warehouses in Porto Vecchio were closed in December, and additional closures are planned to restore safety and sanitary conditions ahead of redevelopment work.

At the same time, authorities are seeking to reduce pressure on the local reception system by transferring asylum seekers to other centers across Italy. Officials said the goal is to take formal responsibility for those who had been sheltering in the deteriorating structures.

While some migrants may be offered accommodation, local organizations warn that others could be left without shelter, as access to the abandoned buildings is being permanently blocked.
