A public gathering was held in Trieste on Friday to honor the memory of journalists killed in Gaza since the start of the conflict on October 7, 2023.

Organized by Articolo 21, the regional press association Assostampa, and the Order of Journalists of Friuli Venezia Giulia, the event took place at noon on Corso Italia, beneath the plaque dedicated to four Italian reporters killed on assignment in the 1990s: Marco Luchetta, Alessandro Saša Ota, Dario D’Angelo, and Miran Hrovatin.

During the ceremony, participants read aloud the names of 246 journalists who have died in Gaza over the past year. Organizers described the act as a way to preserve the dignity and memory of their colleagues and to highlight the risks faced by the press in conflict zones.

Speakers also renewed a call for an independent commission, led by the European Federation of Journalists, to be allowed access to Gaza to monitor conditions and report freely. International media have had restricted entry to the territory since the beginning of the war.

The event formed part of the campaign “Alziamo la voce per Gaza” (“Raise Our Voice for Gaza”), which includes a fundraising initiative to support Palestinian journalists.
