Hundreds of residents gathered in Trieste on Friday to pay their final respects to Giorgio Rossi, the longtime city councilor whose decades of public service made him one of the most recognizable figures in local politics.

A public viewing was held in the City Council chamber at City Hall, where Rossi’s family stood beside his coffin as a steady stream of citizens filed past. Among those welcoming mourners was Mayor Roberto Dipiazza, who worked alongside Rossi for roughly 25 years in successive municipal administrations.

Dipiazza described Rossi as both a close friend and a longtime political collaborator, recalling their shared efforts on major infrastructure projects, including the redevelopment of the city’s waterfront and road network. He also praised Rossi’s tenure overseeing cultural affairs, saying his work helped bring national recognition to Trieste.

Following the public viewing, funeral services were held at the Cathedral of San Giusto, where senior civic authorities, political representatives, colleagues and friends joined residents in honoring Rossi’s life and career.

Rossi served for many years in the municipal government, holding several key portfolios and becoming a prominent figure in Trieste’s public administration. His death prompted an outpouring of condolences from across the political spectrum, reflecting the broad respect he earned during his years of public service.
