A public conference addressing gender equality in the workplace, employment trends and financial security will take place on Wednesday, April 22, at 4:30 p.m. at the Urban Center in Trieste.

Titled “Donne e Lavoro” (“Women and Work”), the event was presented on Tuesday at City Hall by Maurizio De Blasio, the municipal councillor for Education and Family Policies, and Margherita Paglino, president of the city’s Equal Opportunities Commission. The conference is organized by the commission with support from the municipal department.

Open to the public and also recognized as a training activity for authorized municipal staff, the event aims to provide data, analysis and practical information on equal opportunities in employment, with particular attention to wages, pensions and the current labor market. A specific focus will be placed on the local context in Trieste.

The discussion will be moderated by Ms. Paglino and will feature contributions from national and regional officials of Italy’s social security agency, including Valeria Vittimberga, director general of INPS, Francesca Filla and Marco De Sabbata of INPS Friuli Venezia Giulia, as well as Gian Piero Gogliettino, a labor law expert and member of a regional fund supporting access to credit for precarious workers.

Speaking at the presentation, Mr. De Blasio emphasized the importance of addressing women’s employment as a means of strengthening equal opportunity policies. He said that such initiatives should extend beyond theory and lead to tangible benefits for the broader community. The conference, he noted, is designed to inform women about job opportunities while also clarifying issues related to pay and retirement systems.

Ms. Paglino described the conference as an effort to provide both practical tools and technical knowledge, particularly through the involvement of INPS, to support women’s employment and autonomy. She also pointed to the need to address cultural barriers that continue to affect career continuity, especially in relation to motherhood.

“Women and work are two essential words with deep meaning,” Ms. Paglino said. “They represent challenges of our time, to be addressed not only economically but also culturally and socially.”

The initiative reflects a broader effort by local institutions to promote what organizers describe as substantive equality, aimed at ensuring that women have the freedom and resources to make independent professional and personal choices.
