On Wednesday afternoon, 22 April, a small corner of Trieste will mark Earth Day with a focus on its youngest residents. From 4:30 to 6 p.m. on April 22, two brightly stocked vans will arrive at the Maddalena public garden, carrying books, games and creative activities designed for children up to age 6 and their families. The initiative is organized by the Villaggio per Crescere of San Giacomo, in collaboration with the city’s Fifth District and with support from the local committee Maddalena Vive.
The event coincides with Earth Day, observed worldwide each year on April 22. This year’s theme, “Our Power, Our Planet,” highlights the idea that environmental transition depends not only on scientific knowledge, but also on the values that shape everyday choices.
The vans—one operated by Villaggio per Crescere and the other by the group known as Drago Zio Giò—serve as mobile libraries, bringing books and play materials directly into neighborhood spaces. Organizers say the gathering is intended both as an opportunity for shared reading and play, and as a way to strengthen community ties by introducing families to local educational and cultural initiatives.
The event will take place in the Maddalena garden, with entrances on Via Costalunga 2 and Via Molino a Vento 123. In case of bad weather, it will be postponed to April 29 at the same time.
