The Trieste Spring Run 2026 will mark a milestone on May 3, as the annual race celebrates the 30th anniversary of the Bavisela with the return of a full marathon after a decade-long absence.

Organized by ASD Trieste Atletica APS and APD Miramar, the event will include three main races — a marathon, a half marathon and a noncompetitive family run — all culminating in Piazza Unità d’Italia, the city’s central square overlooking the Adriatic Sea.

First held in 1994 in Barcola, the Bavisela has grown into one of the region’s most prominent running events. This year’s edition reintroduces the 42-kilometer marathon, which organizers say will trace both urban streets and coastal roads, offering participants views of the historic center and the Gulf of Trieste. Details of the course are expected to be published on the event’s official website in the coming weeks.

The half marathon, covering 21 kilometers, is set to begin in Sistiana, while the Family Run will start from Bivio di Miramare and pass through Barcola, Porto Vivo and the city’s waterfront, known as the Rive. A children’s race, the Trieste Spring Young, is scheduled for April 30, also in Piazza Unità d’Italia.

More than 3,000 runners have already registered for the marathon and half marathon combined, according to organizers. Participants are expected from across Europe and beyond, including more than 400 from Austria, about 100 from Slovenia and roughly 80 from Germany, as well as runners traveling from countries such as Australia, Japan, Canada, the United States and Singapore.

The race is co-organized with the Comune di Trieste and supported by the Regione Friuli Venezia Giulia. Generali Italia S.p.A. is the event’s main sponsor.

A Marathon Expo will open on April 30 in Piazza Unità d’Italia, coinciding with the youth race. Registration for all events remains open through the official race website.
