Friuli Venezia Giulia will host Italy’s 2027 National University Championships after a joint bid from the university sports centers of Trieste and Udine was selected over a competing proposal from Turin.
The event, one of the country’s largest university sporting competitions, is expected to bring thousands of student-athletes, coaches and staff members to the region in late spring and early summer of 2027. Organizers said the main hub will be the Bella Italia Efa Village in Lignano Sabbiadoro, while competitions will also take place in Trieste, Udine and other locations across the region.
The winning proposal was developed by the university sports centers of Trieste and Udine in collaboration with the Universities of Trieste and Udine, the regional branch of the Italian Olympic Committee and the Friuli Venezia Giulia regional government.
Officials said the games would include a wider range of optional sports alongside traditional disciplines, with plans to introduce paralympic competitions for the first time in the history of the event.
Regional governor Massimiliano Fedriga described the decision as recognition of the region’s ability to host large-scale sporting events, while university and sports officials emphasized the cooperation between Trieste and Udine in securing the bid.
