The historic training ship has completed a 153-day voyage across North America marking the 250th anniversary of American independence. Visitors can board through Sunday.

The Amerigo Vespucci, the Italian Navy’s historic training ship, arrived in Trieste in the rain after 153 days at sea, completing its North America 2026 world tour ahead of the city’s annual Barcolana sailing regatta.

The vessel docked at Molo dei Bersaglieri, where it will remain through Sunday, Oct. 11, welcoming visitors during the days leading up to the regatta, one of the largest sailing events in the world.

The voyage began in Genoa in May and was organized by Italy’s Defense Ministry and Navy to mark the 250th anniversary of American independence. The ship called at Baltimore, New York and Boston before continuing to Canada, with stops in Quebec City and Montreal.

The tour combined the ship’s ceremonial role with a broader effort to strengthen Italy’s international relationships through naval diplomacy.

The Amerigo Vespucci has served as a training ship for 95 years, educating officer cadets from the Italian Naval Academy in Livorno. Its arrival in Trieste brings the North American campaign to a close as the city prepares for the 58th edition of the Barcolana, scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m. Sunday.

Visitors will have the opportunity to explore the ship while it is docked at Molo dei Bersaglieri through Sunday.
