After nearly a decade without its signature race, Trieste has brought the marathon back — and with it, a renewed sense of scale and ambition.
This year’s Spring Run drew close to 10,000 participants, transforming the city’s waterfront into a continuous stream of runners. The event unfolded across multiple distances: roughly 700 athletes tackled the full “Bavisela” route from Piazza Unità to Sistiana and back, while 3,000 lined up for the half marathon starting in Sistiana. The largest contingent, about 7,000 strong, took part in the noncompetitive family run from Miramare to the city center, turning the race into a broad civic celebration as much as a sporting event.
Yet the focal point was unmistakable: the return of the marathon, the 42.195-kilometer race that had been absent for nine years. Its revival drew 700 runners from 32 countries, reintroducing an international field and restoring a dimension that had long defined the event.
Kenya’s Benjamin Kirprop Selem claimed victory in 2:32:21, leading a field that, while largely amateur, underscored the race’s gradual re-entry onto the global running calendar.
