Anywave Wins Barcolana Maxi as Trieste Prepares for Sunday’s Regatta
Alberto Leghissa’s Anywave won the overall standings on corrected time at Friday’s Barcolana Maxi – Trofeo Portopiccolo, repeating its victory from 2025 in a race sailed on the Autumn Cup course in the Gulf of Trieste.
The Frers 64 finished ahead of Fiamme Gialle Nice, an ILC Maxi 79 crewed by members of Italy’s Guardia di Finanza and skippered by Paolo Cian. Doers on Board, a VOR 60 entered by Fincantieri, took third place.
The same three yachts occupied the podium in the race sailed on the Barcolana course, with results calculated on corrected time to account for differences between boats.
The event, organized by the Società Velica di Barcola e Grignano in collaboration with Yacht Club Portopiccolo, brought the large-yacht fleet onto the course that will host Sunday’s 58th Barcolana regatta.
For Fiamme Gialle Nice, this year’s participation carries particular significance as the Guardia di Finanza celebrates the 40th anniversary of its Sailing Section. The club’s president, Mitja Gialuz, met General Raffaele D’Angelo, recently appointed to the role, and outgoing General Antonio Marco Appella during the evening’s events.
Other category winners included David Mizrahi’s Night Shadow, a B&C 52, in the Maxi Racer division; Anywave in the Super Maxi Racer category; Camillo Galiano’s Flying Dragon, a Swan 70 RK, among the Super Maxi Cruisers; and New Zealand Endeavour, a ketch entered by Dwejra Shipping Ltd., in the Mega Yacht Racer division.
Friday’s race offered the maxi yachts a preview of the course ahead of Sunday’s main event, when thousands of sailors are expected to gather in the Gulf of Trieste for one of the world’s largest sailing regattas.
