Firefighters and forest crews continued monitoring the area between Monfalcone and San Giovanni di Duino on Tuesday, three days after a wildfire spread through the interface between wooded areas and inhabited territory.
The fire, which broke out on Saturday, Aug. 8, prompted an overnight deployment of an advanced command post operated by the Gorizia fire department near the affected area. At dawn Tuesday, drones operated by the regional unit of the Italian Fire Brigade’s remotely piloted aircraft service flew over the site to assess remaining risks and identify possible hotspots.
A technical meeting was held Tuesday morning with representatives of the Gorizia prefecture, the fire department, highway police and the regional forestry service. Officials reviewed the results of inspections on the ground, the latest drone survey and weather forecasts for the coming days.
The authorities decided that forest crews and volunteer wildfire teams from the Civil Protection service would continue clearing and securing the affected area. Firefighters specializing in wildfire response will maintain surveillance of the territory, traveling along forest roads and trails across the Karst plateau.
The advanced command post established by the Gorizia fire department has now been closed, with firefighting vehicles returning to their headquarters.
Traffic has also resumed on the SA 14 road, which had been closed during the emergency.
Officials said continued monitoring and fire-prevention work would remain in place as crews assess the condition of the landscape and the risk of renewed fires.
