The historic Trieste-Opicina tram line will resume service on Monday, July 20, after receiving authorization from the Friuli Venezia Giulia regional government following the completion of pre-operational testing, Trieste Trasporti announced.
The tram service, operated by Trieste Trasporti on behalf of the Municipality of Trieste, has been suspended while extensive maintenance, safety inspections and infrastructure upgrades were carried out. Timetables are available on the transport operator’s website.
The work completed over recent months included repairs following the funicular cable incident of Oct. 12, 2025, a full overhaul of the funicular system, structural and electrical inspections of the overhead power line, upgrades to electrical substations, track maintenance, new road separation works, station improvements, vehicle safety inspections and staff training and certification. New signage has also been installed along the route.
Some construction projects, including upgrades to the Piazza Casali and Cologna stops, will continue while the line remains in operation.
The reopening comes with temporary operating restrictions. Under one of the safety requirements, trams will initially carry no more than 80 percent of their maximum passenger capacity. All seats may be used, but standing will not be permitted in the central passenger aisle. Standing will be allowed only on the rear platform at the Opicina end of the tram.
Until the redevelopment of the historic Piazza Oberdan terminus is completed, trams will continue to begin and end their route at Piazza Dalmazia in central Trieste. Construction on the Oberdan terminus is expected to begin at the end of 2026 and conclude by June 2027.
