The Friuli Venezia Giulia regional government has approved nearly €1 million in funding for seven municipal projects aimed at expanding and improving cycling infrastructure across the region, officials announced on Thursday.

The funding, totaling €960,100, will support projects submitted by the municipalities of Arba and Cavasso Nuovo, Fontanafredda, Pontebba, Porcia, Porpetto, Remanzacco, and Torviscosa under the 2026 funding program established by Regional Law No. 8 of 2018.

Regional Infrastructure and Territory Councillor Cristina Amirante said the investment reflects the administration’s continued commitment to developing cycling as an integral part of Friuli Venezia Giulia’s transportation network.

According to the regional government, the funded initiatives are intended to improve cyclist safety, encourage the use of bicycles for everyday travel, and promote sustainable mobility integrated with public transportation and the region’s network of cycling routes.

Seven applications were submitted before the March 1, 2026 deadline. Four focus exclusively on infrastructure improvements, while three combine construction work with educational and promotional campaigns designed to encourage cycling among residents and students. Following the evaluation process, all seven proposals were deemed eligible for funding.

Regional officials said the selected projects are consistent with local cycling plans and regional planning priorities, with particular emphasis on improving road safety, completing existing cycling networks, and encouraging greater bicycle use through public awareness initiatives.

The regional government said the investments are part of a broader strategy to create a more continuous and connected cycling network linking residential areas, schools, industrial zones and public transportation hubs, with the aim of improving mobility and quality of life across Friuli Venezia Giulia.
