On Saturday, May 23, the city of Trieste will once again open the doors of its historic municipal building to residents and visitors as part of the latest edition of “VisitiAMO il Municipio,” a public initiative offering guided tours of spaces that are typically closed to the public.

The free tours, conducted in Italian, will lead participants through several of the building’s most notable rooms, including the City Council Chamber, the Gallery of Mayors and the Salotto Azzurro, an elegant reception room used for official visits. Inside the council chamber, visitors will be able to view Cesare Dell’Acqua’s large-scale painting “La prosperità commerciale di Trieste,” while the Salotto Azzurro houses Hans Makart’s “L’allegoria della navigazione.”

The program will also include a curated display of historical documents from the city’s General Archive, exhibited especially for the occasion in the council chamber.

From the chamber’s windows, visitors can look out over Piazza Unità d’Italia and the Adriatic waterfront, one of the city’s most recognizable panoramas.

As in previous editions, volunteers from the FAI Giovani FVG – Sezione di Trieste, part of Italy’s National Trust-style organization Fondo per l’Ambiente Italiano, will assist with the visits through an ongoing collaboration with the municipality. Art historian Maurizio Lorber is also expected to participate, offering commentary on the artworks and interiors.

Participation is free, though advance booking is required through Eventbrite until 7 a.m. on Friday, May 22, with a limit of two reservations per person. Additional information is available through the city’s institutional portal.

Tours, lasting approximately one hour, are scheduled at the following times:

Morning

  • 10 a.m. (check-in at 9:45 a.m.)
  • 11:30 a.m. (check-in at 11:15 a.m.)

Afternoon

  • 2 p.m. (check-in at 1:45 p.m.)
  • 3:30 p.m. (check-in at 3:15 p.m.)
  • 5 p.m. (check-in at 4:45 p.m.)

Participants are asked to arrive at the registration desk outside City Hall in Piazza dell’Unità d’Italia with their Eventbrite confirmation, either printed or displayed on a smartphone. Organizers noted that late arrivals may not be guaranteed entry.

The event is coordinated by the municipality’s Communication Office and Institutional Information and Open Government Service.
