Italy’s regional rail network is undergoing a major modernization, with Trenitalia, part of the state-owned FS Italiane Group, delivering 108 new trains in 2025 as part of a multi-year investment program. The project, which has a total budget of €7 billion, aims to renew 80 percent of the country’s regional fleet by 2027.
Under the plan, a total of 1,081 new-generation trains are expected to be in service by 2027, including an additional 103 units scheduled for delivery between 2025 and 2026. The new trains are being distributed across the country, with 51 assigned to central Italy, 25 to the north, and 32 to the south and islands, strengthening regional rail services nationwide.
To date, Trenitalia has placed 978 new-generation trains in service, combining 643 units delivered under the current program with 335 previously acquired. The trains are designed to offer increased comfort, technological upgrades, and improved sustainability.
Gianpiero Strisciuglio, Trenitalia’s chief executive, emphasized the broader goals of the fleet renewal. “Investing in advanced, comfortable, and sustainable trains reflects Trenitalia’s industrial capabilities,” he said. “By the end of this program, Italy will have the youngest regional fleet in Europe, with an average age of under ten years. Our focus is on meeting the needs of daily commuters, students, and leisure travelers while supporting regional development.”
Trenitalia operates more than 6,000 regional services daily, transporting over 400 million passengers annually. Its regional network is complemented by around 180 intermodal “Link” connections that integrate trains with buses, ferries, and other transport modes, improving access to remote destinations and enhancing service efficiency across the country.
In Friuli Venezia Giulia, the regional transport plan includes seven new trains in 2026, with four more scheduled for 2027, as part of the nationwide modernization effort.
