The Friuli Venezia Giulia regional government has approved nearly €3 million in funding for extraordinary maintenance on local roads set to host part of the 20th stage of the 2026 Giro d’Italia, which will run from Gemona del Friuli to Piancavallo.
Regional Infrastructure Councillor Cristina Amirante said the financing aims to ensure that the international cycling event can take place under optimal safety conditions. “This is an event of global reach that requires particular attention to road surfaces,” she said, noting that the improvements fall under contributions authorized by regional law L.R. 24/2021.
According to the region, a total of €2,928,109.80 will be distributed among nine municipalities where technical inspections by FVG Strade, the regional road authority, identified sections in need of resurfacing and related upgrades. The allocations include €324,093 for Gemona, €35,227.50 for Venzone, €49,318.50 for Bordano, €70,455 for Osoppo, €324,093 for Artegna, €140,910 for Colloredo di Monte Albano, €190,228.50 for Majano, €1,127,280 for Aviano and €666,504.30 for Barcis. The works will be carried out under specific agreements between the municipalities and FVG Strade.
In addition to the municipal contributions, the region has also identified the need for further improvements on regional roads along the race route. These works, valued at an estimated €4,070,889.90, will be financed through ordinary maintenance funds allocated to FVG Strade. The upgrades will involve portions of several major routes, including the SS 13 “Pontebbana,” SR 512 “del Lago di Cavazzo,” R 356 “di Cividale,” SR 251 “della Val di Zoldo e della Val Cellina,” SR 463 “del Tagliamento,” SR 464 “di Spilimbergo” and SR 552 “del Passo Rest.”
The regional government has directed FVG Strade to include these projects in the updated 2025–26 three-year maintenance plan, ensuring full financial coverage.
“The passage of the Giro d’Italia is an opportunity to promote the region, but it also demands high standards of safety and road quality,” Councillor Amirante said. “With this measure, we are providing adequate resources to municipalities and ensuring coordinated planning with FVG Strade.”
