Trieste will observe a series of civic and religious events, beginning Monday with the annual celebration of San Giusto, the city’s patron saint, and continuing with ceremonies marking the 107th anniversary of Trieste’s return to Italy after World War I.

On Monday, November 3, a Pontifical Mass will be held at 10 a.m. at the Cathedral of San Giusto. The service will be presided over by Bishop Enrico Trevisi and attended by the city’s official delegation, including the mayor, Roberto Dipiazza, and the municipal banner.

Commemorations of the anniversary of Trieste’s “redemption” to Italy and the landing of the Bersaglieri corps will take place throughout the day. Organized by the National Bersaglieri Association in coordination with the municipality and the regional military command, the program includes a flag-raising ceremony at 10 a.m., followed at 4:30 p.m. by the arrival of the “Staffetta Tricolore” relay from San Giusto Hill and a symbolic landing by a detachment of the 11th Bersaglieri Regiment at Piazza Unità d’Italia. Wreath-laying ceremonies at the Scala Reale will follow, with musical honors rendered by the regiment’s band, and the day will conclude with a solemn flag-lowering at 5 p.m.

The city banner, honored with a Gold Medal of Military Valor, as well as veterans’ organizations and local authorities, are expected to take part. The president of the City Council, Francesco Di Paola Panteca, will attend the morning ceremonies, while Mayor Dipiazza will participate in the afternoon events.

The following day, Tuesday, November 4, a ceremony commemorating Italy’s National Unity and Armed Forces Day will be held at 10 a.m. at the Redipuglia Military Memorial, one of Italy’s largest war cemeteries. Trieste will be represented by the municipal standard and Maurizio De Blasio, the city councillor for education and family services. In Trieste’s main square, Piazza Unità d’Italia, the regional military command will conduct flag-raising and lowering ceremonies at 10 a.m. and 5 p.m., attended by Deputy Mayor Serena Tonel.

On Wednesday, November 5, at 5 p.m., a memorial Mass will be celebrated at the Church of Sant’Antonio Nuovo to honor the six civilians killed during the unrest of November 1953: Pietro Addobbati, Erminio Bassa, Leonardo Manzi, Saverio Montano, Francesco Paglia and Antonio Zavadil, all posthumously awarded medals for civil merit. The service, led by parish priest Don Roberto Rosa and attended by the mayor and the city banner, will be followed by the laying of a wreath by the National League at the commemorative plaque outside the church.

The annual observances highlight Trieste’s layered history, where religious tradition, national memory and local identity intersect across a week of solemn ceremonies and civic participation.
