As Christmas approaches, Trieste is donning its festive attire. In the heart of town, Piazza Unità recently received its customary Croatian fir trees, carefully secured to withstand the city’s famous, gusty Bora winds. These trees, chosen from Croatian nurseries, join the holiday lights adorning the square and await Trieste’s traditional “crooked” star ornament, a beloved feature hung between the square’s historic flagpoles. Accompanied by Christmas carols and Viennese waltzes, Trieste’s holiday decorations have become a charming blend of Alpine tradition and Adriatic flair, a spectacle locals and visitors cherish each year.
