Italy’s naval flagship, Nave Trieste, is scheduled to arrive in the Gulf of Trieste on Friday to participate in events marking the 71st anniversary of the city’s return to Italy.
The ship, Italy’s largest postwar naval vessel, will initially be moored at Molo VII before moving to Molo Bersaglieri, where the public will have the opportunity to view it.
During the visit, the Trieste is set to receive its battle flag, a ceremonial emblem of honor and identity within the Navy. The presentation is planned for Sunday in Piazza Unità d’Italia, weather permitting. Senior naval officials, including Admiral Enrico Credendino, Chief of Staff of the Italian Navy, are expected to attend, and Defense Minister Guido Crosetto may also participate depending on government commitments.
Constructed entirely in Italy, the Trieste displaces 37,500 tons, surpassing the previous flagship, Cavour. As a Landing Helicopter Dock (LHD), it supports troop transport, vehicles, and aircraft, including F-35B fighter jets, and can accommodate over 1,000 personnel, including a battalion of 600 marines.
The ship last visited Trieste in March, drawing thousands of visitors alongside the training vessel Amerigo Vespucci. This week’s arrival highlights the city’s ongoing maritime significance and the symbolic connection between the Navy and Trieste.
