The Adriatic port city is preparing to celebrate the return of one of its most storied symbols: the Trieste bathyscaphe, the vessel that made history in 1960 with its descent into the Mariana Trench, the deepest known point on Earth.

In a week’s time, a full-scale faithful replica of the bathyscaphe will be unveiled in Piazza Unità d’Italia, the city’s main square. Ahead of the arrival, Trieste will host a public presentation of the project, Bentornato Batiscafo Trieste (“Welcome Back, Bathyscaphe Trieste”), an event meant to connect history, memory and the community.

The gathering is scheduled for Monday, Sept. 22, at 6 p.m. in the Sala Luttazzi at Magazzino 26 in the city’s Old Port. Giorgio Rossi, Trieste’s councilor for culture and tourism, who has strongly backed the initiative, will open the evening alongside members of the project team and institutional and private partners.

The program will feature filmmaker Massimiliano Finazzer Flory, who is working on a documentary about the reconstruction of the vessel. He is expected to share footage from the production and discuss the symbolic and cultural significance of reviving an icon of exploration that also serves as a point of civic pride.

The replica will eventually be housed at the Museo de Henriquez, a local institution dedicated to history and memory. Organizers said the initiative is designed not only as a tribute to a pioneering scientific achievement, but also as an opportunity for the city to reflect on its maritime identity.

Earlier in the day, at 11 a.m., the Sala Bobi Bazlen at Palazzo Gopcevich will host a press conference presenting Batiscafo Trieste 2025 to members of the media.
