From August 5 to 7, the city of Trieste will offer a diverse program of music, history, and immersive art as part of the “Trieste Estate” summer festival. Set against the backdrop of Roman architecture and central-European melodies, the event is designed to blend cultural heritage with contemporary creativity.

The series begins on Tuesday, August 5, at 8:30 p.m. in the garden of the “J.J. Winckelmann” Museum of Antiquities. Historian Livio Zerbini will lead a conference titled Le vie delle città romane (“The Roads of Roman Cities”), exploring the infrastructure and urban planning of the Roman world. The lecture is part of the festival’s “Archeologia di sera” (“Evening Archaeology”) program, held in collaboration with Un Mare di Archeologia, and is free to attend.

Following the talk, audiences will be treated to a concert by the ensemble Lumen Harmonicum and tenor Paolo Venier. Their performance, part of an ongoing series focused on rediscovering and reinterpreting materials from the Musical Archive of the Civic Theater Museum “Carlo Schmidl,” will feature a blend of historic selections and newly commissioned compositions. Each concert in the series follows an alphabetical motif, offering a curated and thematic musical experience.

For the evening, the museum will also open its doors for a special nighttime viewing, inviting visitors to explore Trieste’s classical past through a different lens.

The broader Trieste Estate program continues throughout the week with additional offerings in blues, gospel, and music from the Austro-Hungarian tradition. As the city embraces its position at the crossroads of cultures, the festival invites both residents and tourists to experience its layered identity—part Roman outpost, part Habsburg port—through sound, story, and space.
