About 4,000 people, according to police estimates, took part in a march through Trieste on Friday as part of a general strike organized by the USB union.

The demonstration began shortly after 10 a.m. at Gate 4 of the port, drawing many students and young people, including participants from outside the city, alongside union representatives and workers from companies facing difficulties, including Electrolux.

Carrying banners and signs, demonstrators called for greater job security, increased investment in education and employment, and an end to wars. One of the most prominent slogans was “Lower the weapons, raise wages.”

The march passed through the city center, reaching Piazza Oberdan before continuing toward Piazza Libertà, where it was scheduled to conclude. Several shops temporarily lowered their shutters along the route, particularly between Piazza Goldoni and Corso Italia. A McDonald’s restaurant also temporarily suspended normal operations.

Authorities reported no significant incidents, and the demonstration remained peaceful.

Public transportation services across Friuli Venezia Giulia continued to operate regularly. The Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport had postponed the USB strike affecting local public transportation following objections from the national strike-monitoring commission over its timing during the protected period surrounding the Nov. 2 commemoration of the dead. Bus and rail services were therefore guaranteed.
