Trieste is expanding its public transportation services for the Barcolana sailing event from Oct. 9 to 11, introducing dedicated parking areas, additional bus services and seven nighttime express routes.
The Park&Bus program, organized by Tpl Fvg and Trieste Trasporti with the city government, will allow visitors to leave their cars at three designated parking areas — Park Bovedo, the Opicina junction and Piazzale delle Puglie — and continue into the city by bus.
A day pass costs €1 and can be used without limits on Trieste Trasporti buses. Holders of valid Trieste Trasporti passes can use the parking areas and buses without purchasing an additional ticket. Park&Bus will operate from 2 to 9 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday. Pasted markdown
For the two busiest evenings, Friday and Saturday, the usual Notturno-TSonDemand service will be replaced by seven fixed-route nighttime express services. The routes will connect the city center with Muggia, Opicina, Aurisina, Cattinara, Barcola, San Vito-Baiamonti and San Giovanni. Passengers will be able to board along the routes using regular tickets or passes, without reservations.
The nighttime services will run from roughly 10:15 p.m. into the early morning hours, with the most frequent routes serving Opicina, Cattinara and Barcola. The Muggia service, for example, will depart from Largo Città di Santos at 10:20 p.m., midnight, 2 a.m. and 3:50 a.m.
The city will also introduce temporary road closures around the waterfront and central streets during the weekend, resulting in changes to several bus routes. The Rive will be closed during several periods between Friday evening and Sunday afternoon, while additional restrictions will affect Via Diaz, Via Madonna del Mare and Via Cadorna on Saturday evening. Trieste Trasporti will respond with modified routes on several services, including Lines 8, 9, 17, 24, 30 and A. On Sunday morning, additional traffic restrictions in the northern part of the city will also affect Lines 42 and 44. Pasted markdown
Additional buses will be added to several routes throughout the weekend, including Lines 4 and 36. Line 36, connecting the city center with the Miramare area, will be temporarily reinstated for the event. Extra services will also operate on Lines 42 and 64 on Sunday. Pasted markdown
The Trieste-Muggia maritime service operated by Delfino Verde Navigazione will also offer evening departures through Saturday, with additional late-night sailings on Friday and Saturday. Pasted markdown
The expanded network is intended to give visitors alternatives to driving during one of Trieste’s busiest weekends, when large crowds are expected to converge on the waterfront and the Barcolana village.
