This summer, the city’s principal fortress is welcoming international audiences with “The Story of Trieste,” a series of guided tours conducted in English every Sunday at 5:30 p.m. The initiative offers visitors an introduction to the city’s complex past, from the Roman settlement of Tergeste to its transformation into one of the Habsburg Empire’s most important ports.
San Giusto Castle is unlike many European fortifications built during a single period. Construction began in 1468 under the Austrian emperors and continued in successive phases until 1636, resulting in the distinctive triangular fortress reinforced by three monumental bastions that still define its silhouette today. The castle later became property of the Municipality of Trieste and opened as a civic museum in 1936.
Inside the museum, visitors encounter the Lapidario Tergestino, an important collection of Roman inscriptions, sculptures and architectural fragments recovered from ancient Tergeste, alongside an extensive armory illustrating the evolution of military life from the Middle Ages through the 19th century.
The tour extends beyond museum galleries to the castle’s panoramic ramparts, where sweeping views encompass the Gulf of Trieste, Piazza Unità d’Italia and the limestone Karst plateau. From this vantage point, the geography that shaped Trieste’s role as a crossroads between Central Europe and the Mediterranean becomes immediately apparent.
The one-hour experience is organized by the Civic Museums of Trieste in collaboration with CoopCulture. Participation costs €7, with museum admission purchased separately, and advance reservations are recommended.
For English-speaking travelers, the program offers more than a traditional castle visit: it is an opportunity to understand the cultural layers that have defined one of Italy’s most distinctive border cities.
