Rail workers will stage a 24-hour walkout on Sept. 7–8, while additional strikes later in the month are expected to disrupt flights, public transport, schools and healthcare across Italy.

Travellers returning to Italy after the summer holidays may encounter significant disruptions in September, as a series of nationwide labor strikes is set to affect rail, air and local transport services.

The first major stoppage will begin at 9 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 7, when train drivers and onboard staff employed by Trenitalia, Trenitalia Tper and Mercitalia Rail launch a 24-hour national strike lasting until 9 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 8.

The walkout is expected to impact passenger and freight rail services across the country. Italian railway regulations require operators to maintain minimum guaranteed passenger services during weekday peak commuting hours, with protected trains scheduled between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. and 9 p.m.

Further rail disruptions are anticipated on Sept. 10 and 11, when regional maintenance and infrastructure employees at Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI) are scheduled to strike. During the same period, workers at freight operator Captrain Italia will also participate in a separate national walkout, potentially affecting cargo transport.

Additional nationwide strikes are planned later in September, including a general strike on Sept. 26 and industrial action affecting the aviation sector on Sept. 30, with broader disruptions expected to public transportation, schools and healthcare services.
