A new 400-space parking facility has opened between the former Silos complex and the Porto Vecchio redevelopment area, providing additional parking within walking distance of Trieste’s central railway station and Piazza Unità d’Italia.
The lot, located on land owned by Coop Alleanza 3.0, is already operational. Parking costs €1.50 per hour or €13 for a full day. The site also includes dedicated spaces for tourist buses and is equipped with lighting for overnight use.
City and business representatives said the new facility is intended to ease seasonal parking shortages, particularly during the busy summer months when cruise ships bring thousands of visitors to the city. Officials described the project as a practical addition rather than a complete solution to Trieste’s long-standing parking challenges.
Security measures include daytime staff, overnight security guards and the planned installation of about 20 surveillance cameras in the coming weeks.
The site had previously been used as a temporary free parking area during major events such as the Barcolana regatta and the Christmas season. Before that, it hosted the Cirque du Soleil under a temporary arrangement supported by regional funding that also helped prepare the area.
Deputy Mayor Serena Tonel said the space had also been designed to serve as a venue for cultural events and could retain that dual function in the future.
The parking lot sits beside the long-abandoned Silos buildings, once used as an informal shelter by migrants. While the surrounding property remains owned by Coop Alleanza 3.0 after a proposed sale to Austrian investors fell through, the broader redevelopment of the site remains uncertain. Company representatives said the parking project is separate from long-term plans for the area, whose redevelopment is expected to require an investment of at least €150 million.
