Trieste is among 25 Italian cities placed under the Health Ministry’s highest heat warning as an intense heatwave continues to affect much of the country through Tuesday and Wednesday.
The ministry’s Level 3, or “red,” alert signals emergency conditions in which extreme temperatures may pose health risks not only to older adults, young children and people with chronic illnesses, but also to otherwise healthy and active individuals.
Across Italy, cities including Rome, Milan, Venice, Florence, Naples and Turin are also under the maximum alert. Authorities advise residents and visitors to avoid prolonged exposure to the sun during the hottest hours of the day, between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m., remain in cool environments, drink plenty of water and avoid strenuous outdoor activities.
While Trieste continues to experience unusually high temperatures, meteorologists say the worst of the heatwave may soon ease. Thunderstorms have already reached parts of northern Italy, bringing heavy rain and localized flooding in some areas, and are expected to spread southward on Wednesday.
Forecasters expect temperatures to gradually return closer to seasonal averages by July 3. However, weather experts warn that another spell of intense heat, driven by a renewed expansion of the African anticyclone, could arrive as early as the weekend, potentially bringing above-average temperatures through much of July and August.
Italy’s Health Ministry continues to publish daily heatwave bulletins for 27 major urban centers, including Trieste, as authorities monitor conditions across the country.
