Regional and local officials on Thursday inaugurated a new bicycle connection linking Trieste Airport to the surrounding cycling network, marking the completion of a €6.6 million infrastructure project aimed at improving sustainable transportation and intermodal access.
The project, funded entirely by the Friuli Venezia Giulia region, creates a dedicated cycling route connecting the airport area with nearby municipalities and the airport’s intermodal hub, where rail, bus and air transport services converge.
The new infrastructure includes a cycle path running across the airport frontage, a 60-meter elevated walkway connected to the intermodal center by two large elevators designed to accommodate cyclists with bicycles, and upgrades to airport access roads and parking areas. A new wayfinding system has also been installed.
The project was carried out by Aeroporto Friuli Venezia Giulia, which served as the contracting authority. Construction was completed by Adriacos S.p.A., based on designs by Cooprogetti of Pordenone.
Officials said the new route improves safe access for cyclists to the airport and rail station while strengthening connections between regional cycling corridors and public transportation. The link also serves as an airport bypass of the FVG2/d cycling route, a key component of the region’s cycling network.
Speaking at the inauguration, regional infrastructure councillor Cristina Amirante said the project enhances integration between rail, air and bicycle transport, while airport president Antonio Marano described it as a step toward a more connected and sustainable mobility system.
