Interview: Serena Tonel, Deputy Mayor and Councilor for Economic Development, Theaters, and Major Events
The Municipality of Trieste has presented the 17th edition of the Infiorata di Opicina, the annual floral initiative that invites residents and local businesses to decorate gardens, balconies, storefronts and public spaces across the Karst village.
The project, promoted by the Consorzio Insieme a Opicina–Skupaj na Opčinah in collaboration with local cultural and civic associations and the city administration, will return in 2026 as a community-wide competition aimed at enhancing the appearance of the area while encouraging local participation.
Last year’s edition reached a record 62 participants. The initiative was originally conceived by Giovanna Venturini Crismani, former president of the Associazione per la Difesa di Opicina.
Speaking at City Hall, Deputy Mayor Serena Tonel described the Infiorata as an example of civic engagement that strengthens ties between residents, institutions and local businesses. Organizers highlighted its role in supporting both community identity and the local economy.
Registration for the 2026 edition opened on May 12 and will close on June 27. Participants will compete in four categories, ranging from commercial establishments to private gardens and public spaces. A jury will evaluate entries between June and July, with awards scheduled for July 12 during a summer event in Opicina.
