The regional civil protection agency has issued a yellow weather alert for Friuli Venezia Giulia, effective from 10 p.m. Wednesday, February 18, until noon Friday, February 20. Authorities are warning of heavy rain, strong winds, and high water along the coast, as well as snowfall and avalanche risk in the mountains.
A frontal system moving in from the Atlantic is expected to bring moist air currents from the south at higher altitudes and Scirocco winds at the surface. A low-pressure system is forming over the Triveneto area, intensifying the storm’s effects.
Heavy precipitation is forecast for mountainous and pre-Alpine areas, with substantial rainfall expected in the lowlands and along the coast. Snow levels are predicted to reach 800 to 1,000 meters in the pre-Alpine areas facing the plains, and lower elsewhere, starting around 400 meters in the inland valleys. Snow accumulation could reach up to 50 centimeters at around 1,000 meters, raising the risk of avalanches.
On the coast, sustained Scirocco winds are expected, particularly during the middle of the day. Offshore, strong southerly winds will also affect higher elevations. Coastal areas between Lignano and Grado may see storm surges, and high water levels are expected late Wednesday evening.
Residents are advised to monitor local updates and exercise caution, especially in areas prone to flooding and snow-related hazards.
