More than 500 days after the end of the previous administration, the Port System Authority of Trieste and Monfalcone has a new president: Marco Consalvo, the former chief executive credited with transforming Trieste Airport from a small regional hub into a facility handling 1.6 million passengers a year.

Consalvo began his first day with a dawn inspection of major infrastructure projects funded by Italy’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan, including work at the Seventh and Eighth Piers, the Hungarian terminal, and the electrification of the docks.

He emphasized Trieste’s strategic position as Italy’s most internationally connected port and a key link between the Mediterranean and Central and Eastern Europe, supported by extensive rail connections.

Consalvo acknowledged that the long delay in appointing new leadership has affected the port’s standing. His priority, he said, will be completing ongoing investments on schedule and reestablishing the international credibility built under his predecessor, Zeno D’Agostino.

As Consalvo settles in, unions are pressing for clarity on another key appointment: the authority’s next secretary general, a role they describe as essential for day-to-day operations.
