The governor of the Friuli Venezia Giulia region, Massimiliano Fedriga, spoke in the Regional Council on Monday following the approval of a motion by the governing majority supporting a solution for Palestine.
“The motion presented by the majority represents a balanced approach, aimed at fostering stable and lasting peace, which cannot include the presence of Hamas,” Fedriga said. “The only viable path is to support a shared process capable of stabilizing the area.”
Fedriga referenced a peace proposal recently advanced by U.S. President Donald Trump, noting that it provides a credible framework because it does not involve a terrorist group using its own citizens as human shields. He contrasted this with opposition motions in the council, which he said did not address the same issues or acknowledge Palestinians reportedly killed by Hamas for receiving aid from an Israeli humanitarian organization.
Acknowledging that his stance differs from the mainstream political discourse, Fedriga said, “Some parties are unfortunately using a tragic situation for domestic political purposes.”
In anticipation of the upcoming Italy-Israel soccer match in Udine, Fedriga also expressed concern that political tensions have occasionally fueled public confrontations, indirectly benefiting Hamas, according to him.
He concluded by emphasizing the importance of educating citizens about the complexity of the conflict. “Schools must be pluralistic and provide young people with the critical tools to understand reality, avoiding a one-sided perspective,” he said.
