Trieste’s new municipal police dog unit has shown promising results in its first three months, city officials said Friday during a press conference.

The pilot program, launched in May, includes an eight-year-old Belgian Malinois named Conan and his handler. It is the first time the northeastern Italian city has introduced a canine unit to its local police force.

Caterina de Gavardo, Trieste’s Councilor for Urban Security, said the initiative is part of broader efforts to strengthen public safety. “The data we’re presenting today confirm the value of this long-planned project,” she said.

The trial will continue for one year before the city decides whether to make the unit permanent.
