Interviews: Michele Babuder, City Councilor for Territorial Policy; Professor Luigi Murena, Director of the Department of Medical, Surgical and Health Sciences, University of Trieste
The city of Trieste will launch a new public wellness initiative this weekend under the title “Salute tra terra e mare” — Health Between Land and Sea. The event series, presented Monday at City Hall, is set to begin Saturday, June 21, and will continue through the summer, culminating during European Mobility Week in September.
Designed as a collaboration between the City of Trieste and the University of Trieste’s Department of Medical, Surgical and Health Sciences, the program will include a variety of activities centered on physical health, preventive care, and sustainable urban living. Events will take place in public spaces throughout the city, promoting access to wellness resources and encouraging residents to engage in outdoor movement and education.
The series is structured to reflect this year’s European Mobility Week theme, “Mobility for All”, and aims to connect health with active transportation, inclusion, and environmental awareness.
According to organizers, programming will include free medical consultations, educational workshops, guided walks, and sport-related activities, many of which are intended to engage families and older adults. Events will also highlight the health benefits of coastal and urban environments, underlining the initiative’s “between land and sea” concept.
City Councilor Michele Babuder, who oversees territorial policy, described the initiative as “a natural bridge” between public health and urban policy. Councilor Elisa Lodi, responsible for sport and public property, noted the focus on accessibility and community participation.
University representatives emphasized the role of academic institutions in public engagement. “This is part of our third mission — serving the community beyond education and research,” said Alex Boite Stella, delegate for public and social outreach.
