Firefighters are continuing efforts Sunday to contain and extinguish vegetation fires that have affected the Gorizia area since Saturday, after crews worked through the night to prevent the flames from spreading.
In Selz, part of the municipality of Ronchi dei Legionari, a fire that had been declared under control Saturday evening rekindled in several areas overnight, fanned by strong winds. A team from the Gorizia Fire Brigade remained on site to deal with the flare-ups.
A second, larger fire between Monfalcone and San Giovanni di Duino, near the border between the provinces of Gorizia and Trieste, also kept emergency crews working throughout the night. Firefighters tackled the blaze from the ground and from the Canale dei Tavoloni, helping contain the flames.
On Sunday morning, specialized wildfire teams from the Gorizia and Udine fire brigades were continuing operations, supported by water tankers, fire engines and off-road vehicles equipped for wildfire response.
Firefighters were concentrating on containing the fire front and protecting the marina near the Canale dei Tavoloni and the Lisert gas facility in Monfalcone.
A Drago 168 helicopter from the Venice Fire Brigade’s flight unit was operating in the area. A Canadair firefighting aircraft, dispatched from Genoa, also made several water drops over the fire.
The SS 14 highway remains closed in both directions between San Giovanni di Duino and Monfalcone, near the highway interchange, as firefighting operations continue.
