At the Cannes Film Festival, we caught up with Maks Maltoni, head of programming for the Trieste Science+Fiction Festival. Alongside his colleagues, Maltoni was on the lookout for new cinematic discoveries to bring to Trieste later this year. “We’re searching for bold, thought-provoking science fiction—films that push boundaries,” he told us. The festival, one of Italy’s most respected genre showcases, has built a reputation for spotlighting emerging international talent. Cannes offers the perfect hunting ground, Maltoni added, where hidden sci-fi treasures often emerge. Expect surprises when the festival returns to Trieste this fall.
