Officials in Trieste have unveiled a comprehensive program of events to mark the 80th anniversary of Italy’s Liberation Day, observed annually on April 25 to commemorate the end of Nazi occupation and fascist rule in 1945.

At a press conference on Tuesday morning, Giorgio Rossi, the city’s Councillor for Culture and Tourism, presented the calendar of initiatives organized by the Municipality of Trieste. He was joined by Stefano Bianchi, head of the city’s Historical Museums; Anna Krekic, curator of the Risiera di San Sabba Museum and National Monument; and Mauro Gialuz, representative of the Regional Institute for the History of the Resistance and the Contemporary Age (IRSREC FVG).

The central event will take place on the morning of April 25 with a public ceremony at the Risiera di San Sabba, the former Nazi concentration camp that now serves as a national memorial. In addition to the official commemoration, a series of related events will span several weeks.

“This year’s calendar is more extensive than in previous years, with programming extending from early spring through the beginning of June,” said Mr. Bianchi.

Councilor Rossi noted that the expanded schedule is also the result of recent coordination efforts. He cited a meeting held in recent months with the Prefect of Trieste, during which local institutions and community groups were encouraged to join forces in preparing for the anniversary.

“We have two full months of events ahead of us,” Mr. Rossi said, “because this is a time to engage with the key historical moments that have shaped our country.”

Further details on exhibitions, lectures, and performances will be announced in the coming weeks. The initiatives are part of a broader effort across Italy to mark eight decades since the end of World War II and the birth of the Italian Republic.
