In an effort to enhance safety around elementary schools, the Municipality of Trieste is calling for applications from local residents to serve as “Grandparent Crossing Guards” for the upcoming 2024/2025 school year. This initiative aims to recruit citizens over the age of 50 who have resided in Trieste for at least five years.
Caterina de Gavardo, the city’s Commissioner for Public Safety, emphasizes the importance of these roles. “Our goal is to involve as many people as possible,” she said. “Grandparent crossing guards are crucial for the community. They provide a much-needed service that parents greatly appreciate and that helps young children on their path to independence.”
To apply, prospective crossing guards must provide evidence of their economic situation by including their current ISEE (Equivalent Economic Situation Indicator) certificate in their application. If applicants do not provide this information, their application will still be considered, but the maximum value will be used for ranking purposes.
Applicants must also demonstrate they meet physical and mental fitness requirements. They can either possess a valid driving license (at least category A or B) or submit a medical certificate confirming they meet the standards for holding such a license.
Applications can be downloaded from the municipality’s website here. Completed forms, along with a photocopy of an ID, can be submitted in person at the Local Police, San Sebastiano Barracks, located at via Revoltella 35, from Tuesday to Thursday between 9:00 and 11:00 a.m., or at the Citizen Service Desk (SAC), via Punta del Forno 2, Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., with extended hours on Monday and Wednesday until 3:00 p.m. Alternatively, applications can be emailed to comune.trieste@certgov.fvg.it, with a scanned copy of the ID attached.
Printed forms are available at the entrance of the Local Police headquarters at San Sebastiano Barracks, open daily except Saturdays and holidays, from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., and with extended hours on Mondays and Wednesdays until 6:30 p.m.
The deadline for submissions is August 19, 2024. For further information, interested parties can call 040 675 7655 or 040 675 7652.
Late applications will be accepted but will be placed at the end of the list for any remaining vacancies. Eligible applicants must be Trieste residents for at least five years and at least 50 years old by August 19, 2024. Those who have previously served as crossing guards only need to prove current residency. Employment disqualifies applicants.
