Friuli Venezia Giulia has allocated €150,000 to a new initiative aimed at improving awareness of menopause and promoting women’s physical and psychological well-being through healthcare training, public information campaigns and community outreach.

The project, called Le tante menopause (“The Many Menopauses”), was presented Tuesday in Udine by Riccardo Riccardi, the regional health councilor, alongside Laura Regattin, health director of the Regional Health Coordination Agency (ARCS), and Monica Della Martina, a gynecologist who coordinates the menopause clinic at the University Health Agency of Friuli Centrale.

The initiative will begin around World Menopause Day on Oct. 18 and continue through 2026 and 2027. Its activities will include professional training and conferences for healthcare workers, workplace programs, public meetings across the region and an integrated communications campaign.

Of the €150,000 in regional funding, €50,000 will go toward professional training, while €100,000 will support communications and public awareness efforts.

Riccardi said the project was designed to improve access to reliable information about menopause, a natural stage of life that can involve a wide range of symptoms and varying levels of severity. He also pointed to rising life expectancy as a reason to give greater attention to the health needs of women experiencing menopause and perimenopause.

The initiative will promote a multidisciplinary approach to care, bringing together healthcare professionals and addressing the changing needs of women as they age. It also aims to challenge social stigma and encourage more open discussion of menopause in workplaces and communities.

Regional officials said the program forms part of broader prevention policies intended to improve quality of life and respond to the long-term healthcare needs of the population.
