Trieste recorded its highest temperature on record on Monday, with the mercury reaching 36.4 degrees Celsius (97.5°F) by noon, surpassing the previous city record set in 2002.

Overnight temperatures remained unusually high, with the minimum failing to drop below 28°C (82.4°F), adding to the intensity of the heat wave affecting northeastern Italy.

Italy’s Health Ministry has placed Trieste under a red heat alert beginning Tuesday, June 30, the highest warning level for extreme temperatures. The city is one of 25 provincial capitals expected to face severe heat conditions, with the alert forecast to remain in effect through Wednesday.

Municipal authorities also warned of elevated ground-level ozone concentrations, with pollution levels expected to exceed recommended thresholds until at least Wednesday, when changing weather conditions are forecast to bring some relief.
