City officials have approved a major urban regeneration initiative aimed at revitalizing two of Trieste’s most densely populated neighborhoods, San Giacomo and Valmaura-Giarizzole.
Known as the “Scintille” (Sparks) Project, the program is backed by €2.45 million in regional funding and will finance the design of a portfolio of redevelopment projects that city leaders hope will attract future investment for implementation.
The plans, approved by the municipal government in May, combine physical improvements with social, cultural and community-focused initiatives intended to improve quality of life.
In San Giacomo, planners will focus on highlighting the district’s overlooked assets through a pedestrian route linking Campo San Giacomo to Villa Sartorio Park. Key projects include the renovation of Basevi and Pincherle gardens and the redevelopment of the former civic center on Via Caprin.
For Valmaura-Giarizzole, the strategy centers on transforming the area into a “Urban Mobility Hub,” reflecting its role as a transportation gateway. Proposed projects include a new park-and-ride facility near Piazzale Cagni, the redesign of Piazzale Giarizzole, the creation of green and public spaces near the Risiera di San Sabba National Monument, and new recreational and sports facilities in Valmaura.
The initiative also lays the groundwork for the redevelopment of the former IRFOP site, where the regional government plans to build a new headquarters for the Civil Motor Vehicle Department.
Over the coming months, the city will hold public information events in both neighborhoods while advancing technical feasibility studies for the renovation of Basevi and Pincherle gardens and the construction of a multi-story parking facility at Piazzale Cagni.
