In a quiet corner of Trieste, where apartment buildings frame hidden pockets of green, nature is preparing for a small but meaningful takeover.
On Saturday, June 7, from 10 a.m. to noon, the Giardino di Via Orlandini will host Ali sulla città (“Wings Over the City”), a nature walk devoted to the discovery of urban birdlife. Led by ornithologist and naturalist guide Dorian Lorenzutti, the event invites residents to slow their pace, look up, and tune in to the often-overlooked world of feathered city dwellers.
Part of a series of four “Passeggiate Naturalistiche” (Nature Walks), the initiative is promoted by Ecothema — a local cooperative dedicated to science education — in partnership with the IV and V Municipal Districts of Trieste. The program aims to encourage a deeper appreciation for urban biodiversity and the often invisible wild lives thriving just beyond the sidewalk.
Saturday’s walk will center on the sounds and colors of birds in flight. Participants of all ages will learn how to identify local species by sight and song, using tools provided by Lorenzutti. An interactive bird-themed quiz promises to add a playful twist to the morning’s discoveries.
“Urban nature has its own rhythm, its own voice,” said Lorenzutti in a statement. “It’s just a matter of listening.”
Participation is free and open to the public. No prior experience with birdwatching is required — just curiosity, and perhaps a good pair of walking shoes.
