Trieste’s annual summer cultural festival will draw to a close in early September with a program that pairs scientific discovery with contemporary theater, as Trieste Estate presents its final series of events from Sept. 1 to Sept. 13.
The closing program unfolds across several of the city’s cultural venues, including Magazzino 26 in Porto Vecchio and the Politeama Rossetti, offering activities for families alongside performances exploring identity, history and Europe.
Throughout Sept. 1–6, the city’s science museum, Immaginario Scientifico, continues its Estate con la ricerca series with daily presentations dedicated to TWAS, the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World. Beginning at 4 p.m. at Magazzino 26, visitors can learn about the academy’s international research initiatives, its work on frontier scientific challenges, and the history of the organization. The talks are included with museum admission and do not require reservations.
On Friday, Sept. 4, the museum will host Piccole Serate al Museo: Missione Spazio, an evening program designed for children ages 8 to 12. Starting at 8 p.m., participants will explore space exploration through hands-on experiments and interactive challenges inspired by the Space Shuttle, the International Space Station, lunar missions and the exploration of Mars. The event is held without parents, encouraging children to experience the museum independently in an after-hours setting.
The theatrical portion of the festival begins on Friday, Sept. 11, when the Politeama Rossetti stages Leo. L’unica arte è un pugno at 7:30 p.m. Inspired by the life of the Italian-Congolese boxer Leone Jacovacci, the production examines questions of identity and belonging through the world of amateur boxing. Written by Girolamo Lucania and Alberto Boubakar Malanchino, the play stars Malanchino, with original music by Ivan Bert. It is presented by Cubo Teatro in collaboration with FESTIL and the Teatro Stabile del Friuli Venezia Giulia.
The festival concludes on Sunday, Sept. 13, with Di là dall’Arcadia / uno studio, also at 7:30 p.m. at the Rossetti. Created by the performance collective also.known.as, the work weaves together twelve interconnected stories that place classical mythology in dialogue with contemporary Europe, reflecting on borders, language and the ways maps have shaped bodies and territories. The production features Carmelo Crisafulli, Jonathan Lazzini and Ksenija Martinović, with a text by Simone Corso and dramaturgy by Jovana Malinarić. It was developed as part of FESTIL in partnership with Sardegna Teatro and the Friuli Venezia Giulia performing arts residency network.
Organized by the Municipality of Trieste, Trieste Estate is presented through the city’s Department of Culture and Tourism, with support from PromoTurismoFVG, the Trieste Convention & Visitors Bureau, and municipal departments dedicated to education, families and territorial development.
