A new international sailing competition will debut in the Gulf of Trieste this season, bringing together three historic regattas under a single banner in an effort to strengthen sporting ties across the northern Adriatic.
The LNI Trieste Grand Prix, presented Friday at the headquarters of the Italian Naval League (Lega Navale Italiana), will unite three races held in the Gulf of Trieste into one coordinated sailing series dedicated to competitive sailing and maritime culture. Among those attending the launch were regional officials and Trieste Deputy Mayor Serena Tonel.
Regional Environment Councilor Fabio Scoccimarro described the initiative as an opportunity to reinforce Trieste’s identity as one of Italy’s leading sailing cities, saying that events of this kind enhance the sporting profile of the city, the surrounding territory and the wider Friuli Venezia Giulia region.
Organizers also emphasized the educational role of the Italian Naval League, whose mission includes introducing young people and the broader public to maritime traditions while promoting respect for the sea and environmental stewardship.
The series will be based in Trieste’s harbor and marina, long regarded as the heart of the city’s nautical community. Officials said the setting reflects a vision of the sea not only as a defining landscape, but as a place to be experienced through sport, education and daily life.
The Grand Prix will also have a cross-border dimension, with participation extending to clubs and competitors from Slovenia and Croatia. Organizers said the collaboration highlights the Adriatic as a shared maritime space, using sailing to foster connections across borders that were once marked by historical divisions.
