Service on the historic Trieste-Opicina tram line was temporarily suspended after a technical fault was detected in the system’s funicular section, Trieste Trasporti said.

The problem involved the so-called “shield car,” a vehicle used in the cable-assisted section of the line. The vehicle has undergone an overhaul in recent months by an outside company specializing in cable transport systems, as part of the infrastructure’s mandatory five-year inspection and maintenance program.

Trieste Trasporti said technicians identified the component responsible for the malfunction and began repairs and testing. The company that carried out the recent overhaul was also called in urgently to assist with the intervention.

The suspension has caused disruption for passengers, with staff stationed at the Opicina depot and at Piazza Dalmazia to provide information.

The transport operator said its priority was to restore service while maintaining required safety standards. It expected the problem to be resolved by noon.

Trieste Trasporti apologized for the disruption and thanked passengers for their patience.
